The tree the goats are in is an evergreen argan tree. It is found mostly only in Morocco. The tree reaches heights of 25-30 feet, and has a knobby, twisted trunk that allows for goat climbers. The goats climb the tree because they like to eat the fruit of the tree, which is similar to an olive.

Which is all well and good. Goats in trees. Perfectly natural.

Farmers actually follow the herds of goats as they move from tree to tree. Not because it is so strange to see goats in trees and the farmers like to point and stare, but because the fruit of the tree has a nut inside, which the goats can't digest, so they spit it up or excrete it which the farmers collect. The nut contains 1-3 kernels, which can be ground to make argan oil used in cooking and cosmetics. This oil has been collected by the people of the region for hundreds of years, but like many wild and useful things these days, the argan tree is slowly disappearing due to over-harvesting for the tree's wood and overgrazing by goats.

As a result a group of people and organizations have banded together to try to save the tree. To do so one of the primary locations where the trees grow has
been declared a biosphere preserve. It was also decided that by making the world aware of the oil, it's great taste and supposed anti-aging properties, would create a demand for it. However, the people who planned to market the oil could not envision people wanting to put an oil on their food or their face that was collected from goat excrement. As a result, a campaign is being led to ban grazing on the trees by goats during certain parts of the year to allow the fruit to ripen and fall off on its own. The fruit is then collected and turned into oil by oil cooperatives. So far, this arrangement seems to be working.

Dear Beauty Chick,
At a popular hair salon the stylist recommended that I use a hair oil to make my hair silkier, shinier and in better condition. It’s argan based which I’ve heard is good, and he told me it was natural, but there seem like an awful lot of chemical-sounding ingredients in it. I really liked the smell and how my hair looked when I used it but I’m wondering how ‘natural’ it really is. These are the ingredients as listed on the bottle.

That’s great that you’re willing to look for a more natural alternative to this product that you, admittedly, like the end results of. I know how difficult it is to feel like you have to sacrifice results for questionable ingredients. Unfortunately, your concerns about the ingredients are not without merit, but the good news is that there are some awesome products out there with a much better ingredient profile that should give you just as great results.

You are absolutely right about Argan Oil being a great ingredient. One of the rarest (and consequentially, one of the most expensive) oils in the world, Argan oil is exceptionally rich in natural tocopherols (vitamin E) and is also rich in phenols and phenolic acid, carotenes, squalene and essential fatty acids (a.k.a. omega oils). Basically, the chemical makeup of this natural oil gives it the ability to improve hair strength and health as well as help increase shine and decrease frizziness. Linseed Oil is also a great ingredient for hair products as it is moisturizing and high in linoleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid and antioxidant which studies have shown to be effective in cell regulation and skin-barrier repair as well as having anti-inflammatory benefits.

The first three ingredients listed are silicones. While silicones are derived from Silica (a naturally occurring mineral) they are generally considered to be synthetics. Silicones do have many legitimate medical uses, however in hair products they mainly serve the purpose of coating the hair shaft to give it a silkier feel. They also have water-repelling properties, which help to cut down on frizz. The downside, they can build up over time, weighing down the hair and making it dull a limp. It is not so much that the silicones themselves damage the hair, but rather that they simply coat it, masking any damage rather than actually improving it at a cellular level. The silicones coating the hair can also prevent other, more beneficial ingredients from actually penetrating the hair so that they can improve it structurally. Essentially, the silicones aren’t necessarily bad, they just don’t provide anything more than a temporary benefit.

The rest of the ingredients, I regret, are questionable. Butylphenly MethylPropional is a synthetic fragrance/odor-masking ingredient (it worries me when there is more of a fragrance ingredient in a product than the active ingredients!). Then, of course “fragrance supplement” indicates a synthetic perfume, otherwise they would promote that they use all-natural fragrance, although you could always call the company to check. Then you have some dyes (in my opinion, unnecessary). Coumarin and Alpha Isomethyle Ionone are also fragrance ingredients as well and are often synthetic. Benzyle Benzoate is a fragrance ingredient as well as a solvent.

My verdict: the argan and linseed oils are great, everything else is expendable, but if the other products you use are largely natural in formulation and you really love this product and aren’t sensitive to it, it’s not the worst product you could use. Please note, however, that if you were putting it directly on your skin I would have a very different opinion since, unlike the hair, the skin much more easily absorbs ingredients into the body and bloodstream. If you still want to go for a purer product (it’s certainly worth a try) I highly recommend Rare Elements El Treatment as a weekly treatment. It contains only 100% pure natural oils and no silicones, dyes, fragrances, or preservatives. Having used this myself I can tell you it is a fantastic product and the more you use it, the more you see real, long-term results in your hairs’ appearance, shininess and scalp health.

An option for styling is Jonathan Product Green Rootine Silkening Crème. I’ve found that, depending on your hair type, this one can require a little playing to find the best way to use it but once you get it right, it’s brilliant. I rub a pearl-sized amount between my palms and then work it through towel dried hair-staying away from the roots-and it give me perfectly soft, shiny waves with no greasiness. I did search rather extensively for a hair product that was argan oil based but did not contain the types of ingredients we are trying to avoid and was unable to find one, however you can purchase pure argan oil and use it as a treatment on its own.

The Woman Behind Vanillawood

The hair studio is in the midst of receiving a beautiful and elegant enhancement, thanks to my fabulous client Kricken Yaker, founder of Vanillawood, a design/build firm located in Portland’s Pearl District.

Vanillawood offers a complete, personalized design vision for any location or environment, be it your home or workspace. She has offered me her great expertise in expanding the light radiance of the salon with the design and installation of seven-foot high custom-cut mirrors into the space.

Everyone wants to see their own natural beauty, and these mirrors dramatically reflect that, giving a sense of glamor and celebration, giving the loft a new backstage filmset or photoshoot feel.

I really admire Kricken for her love towards raising a beautiful family while running a successful business, and still always remaining fashion forward. I am totally excited about doing her hair for her. Her hair is edgy and modern. The color is bright and holds much depth to it. I guess if you want to see. . . you’ll have to visit Vanillawood. Yes, Kricken, you must have your hair down. Girls, its just too damaging to pull your hair back all too often. For a less damaging up-look… put your hair into a loose top-bun.

p.s. I’ll soon be getting custom pillows from Vanillawood for my sofa. Can’t wait! xo

Argan Oil for Healthy Hair

Since my last post on Morrocan Oil hair products, some clients have been asking me about argan oil, the key component in Morrocan Oil.

Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the argan tree, an ancient species that grows primarily in Morocco. The oil has been extracted and used for cooking purposes for thousands of years in Africa, but it has only recently gained popularity in the West for use in hair products, due to its vitamin-rich content.

Argan oil contains over 70% Omega-3 and Omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids, which gives it the ability to penetrate the hair shaft and restore damaged hair. It is also extremely rich in Vitamin E, or tocopherols, which helps stimulate hair growth. Because argan oil so easily absorbs into the hair, it quickly hydrates and adds moisture, leaving hair soft and shiny. This is a great oil to use to de-frizz curly hair, or add life to chemically treated or damaged hair.

The really fabulous news is that unlike many exotic imports these days, the production and sale of argan oil is regulated and protected, so there is no exploitation of the workers or the environment. All argan oil is produced by a women’s cooperative in Morroco, with the proceeds going directly to the community and to reforestation projects to protect the argan tree while still meeting the increased demands for this exceptional product.

Well, as all of us are feeling the weather shift into Autumn, this is exciting… who doesn’t love to wear soft warm garments to keep us inspired through winter and with hair colors to bring warmth back in… The scents of the season are also changing.

Bringing me to my HOT PICK product of this season. I’ve introduced MoroccanOil and MoroccanOil Luminous Hairspray, thanks to Melodie’s recommendation (thanks Mel!). Many of the best fashion magazines have been writing about these argan oil based products as one of the best beauty buys. This treatment is incredibly easy to use, just applying when the hair is damp and, wallah, you have healthy, shiny, beautiful, de-frizzed hair. This product also helps with overly damaged or dry hair.

With hairspray, it generally leaves a residue or a tact to the hair. This MoroccanOil hairspray is not that, its lightweight and holds the style the entire day, allowing you to run your fingers through your hair and not feel the product, which I always love. The best thing about these products is that they are non-animal tested and contain no animal ingredients. What’s not to love?

Best Beauty Discoveries of 2009

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS!

2009 was a year for a lot of new spa experiences and discovering some very exciting beauty lines and products, so in no particular order, here they are. I will be reviewing some of them in greater detail in posts to come.

1. Experiencing an authentic Hammam in Morrocco. The ultimate exotic experience. An ancient beauty ritual of steaming and exfoliating the skin. Discovering the amazing exfoliating properties of Moroccan black soap and scrubbing gloves.

2. Going to Blue Mountain Resort in the early Fall to the Scandinave Spa. It was incredibly relaxing soaking in the outdoor pools and enjoying the Fall colours against a backdrop of a bright blue sky. The weather was still warm enough to sit outside in the sunshine and going between the different heated pools was beyond bliss. After the hot pools, having a nutritious lunch overlooking the pools and a relaxing massage. A wonderful outdoor spa experience.

3. Visiting the new Murale beauty product store for the first time. So many hard too find brands of make-up, perfume, skin care and body products all under one roof. A candy store for the beauty product lover.

4. Having my make-up done with the NARS Fall collection at Holt Renfrew in Yorkdale and then going with friends to have our make-up done at the Bay with a visiting NARS rep. NARS products are amazing, the colours are beautiful and most importantly their reps and customer service is hands down, the best. A visit to a NARS counter is a fun experience.

5. Being introduced to a myriad of wonderful lines at Sephora. Korres make-up primer, Juice Beauty tinted foundation, Serge Lutens perfumes, the list goes on.

6. Urban Decay, 24/7 pencils. The texture is soft and goes on like velvet. The range of colours is extensive. Urban Decay is vegan friendly and not tested on animals.

7. Argan Oil for face and hair. I had the good fortune of visiting an Argan oil cooperative in southwestern Morocco. The Berber women produce the oil using traditional and very labour intensive methods. Even purchasing the oil directly from the cooperatives is still expensive as Argan oil is a costly and precious commodity. A little of the oil goes a long way. It can be used on the face, the body and hair to moisturize and renew. A rare and incredible product.

8. Discovering Julie Hewitt's Noir collection lipsticks. A line of vintage red lipsticks, you can't just buy one, you will want to have them all. Film Noir is a sheer all purpose red, good for all occasions.

9. Diving deeper into the wonderful world of perfumery, through blogs like the Perfume Posse and Perfume Shrine, discovering L'Artisan, Serge Lutens, Andy Tauer and Amouage. Although Oud was the fragrance du jour of 2009, I will always love Gardenia.

10. Nuxe Paris, a wonderful line formulated using pure plants and essential oils. A historic line ahead of its time. I will be writing lots and lots on this wonderful line in my Winter Moisturizing series.

11. Chantecaille Aromacologie products, a beautifully formulated luxury skincare line. Launched this Fall at Holt Renfrew in Toronto. The products are formulated with rose and other essential oils. The Nano Gold Energizing Cream actually contains particles of 24-karet gold.

12. Having fun with all the new colours, sparkle and glitter in the world of nail polish. Nail art is alive and well, the more bling the better, and yes Zoya was the original "3 free". Can't wait for the China Glaze re-launch of the Wizard of Ooh Ahz this Spring and Up Up and Away.

13. Paul and Joe Make-up. The packaging is just too adorable and retro. Argan oil lover's Moroccan tagine of lamb and prunes

I've been to Morocco, and I can tell you that along the southern coast near Agadir there are packs of goats who spend their days climbing into argan trees and nibbling the fruit they find amongst the branches.

These goats know a good thing. Argan oil, pressed from the fruit of the argan tree, is a staple of traditional Moroccan cooking. I've experienced argan oil in Morocco and will always remember the nutty smell because bare-breasted Berber women slathered it all over my naked body in the hammam baths when I stayed near Agadir while on a yoga retreat.

I'm glad I enjoyed the oil's richness then, because here in New York City a tiny 8-ounce bottle of the stuff costs about $35, and the only place I know where you are certain to find argan oil here is at Kalustyan's.

I love Kalustyan's. For a dinner party I gave this weekend, I was almost happy to pay that crazy-expensive price for a tiny bottle of the precious oil because it gave me an excuse to go to this specialty foods shop at 123 Lexington Ave., where I splurged on not just argan oil but orange blossom water, preserved lemons, cumin seed, cinnamon sticks, saffron and the spice mix called ras el hanout.

Dinner was lush, with little thanks to me. The thanks go to Kalustyan's, the herbs I found at my local produce market and the Cafe Morocco cookbook by Anissa Helou, who has become my new friend in the kitchen. With her comprehensive recipes and the flavor profiles she sets forth, I have begun to understand the complexity and aromatic tastes of Moroccan cuisine.

Here, then, is the tagine I cooked this weekend, taken from Cafe Morocco. Although the recipe calls for the cheaper and more available olive oil, I used argan oil, which has properties similar to olive oil.

Tagine of Lamb with Prunes (Tajen Lham bel Barquq)
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (or argan oil)
2 and 1/4 pounds boneless neck or leg of lamb, cut into big chunks
1 medium-sized onion
2 bunches cilantro, tied together
1 cinnamon stick
pinch of saffron filaments, crushed
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
sea salt and finely ground black pepper
2 cups prunes, pitted
3-5 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon orange blossom water
1 tablespoon sesame seeds, toasted

1) Put the oil, lamb chunks, peeled onion, cilantro and cinnamon stick into a wide Dutch oven. Add the saffron, ginger, a little salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Cover with 3 and 1/2 cups water. Bring to a boil, then cover and let boil for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until the meat is tender and the cooking broth has become very concentrated.

2) Remove the cinnamon stick and the cilantro. Turn the meat in the sauce, and add the prunes. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for a further 15 minutes. Stir occasionally, and add a little water if you think the tagine is becoing too dry. If the sauce is too runny, increase the heat to high and boil uncovered until reduced.

3) Stir in the honey and simmer, still covred, for 10 more minutes. Add the orange blossom water and let the tagine bubble for a minute or two. The sauce should be thick and unctuous, the meat very tender, and the prunes plumped up.

For centuries, the Berber people of south-west Morocco have used oil from a tree endemic to the region as a staple food and in traditional medicines.

In recent years, there’s been increasing demand for oil from the argan tree in Western countries, where it’s used by gourmet chefs, and by cosmetic companies which claim it has antiaging and restorative properties. Now the Moroccan government is hoping to triple production of argan oil by 2020, from the current level of around 100 tons a year.

It’s hoped that poor rural women in particular would benefit from expansion of the argan oil industry in an arid region with few industries and employment prospects. The trouble is, the slow-growing argan tree is already listed as an endangered species, presenting scientists with a huge challenge to avert over-exploitation.

Argan oil comes from the two to three kernels found inside the pit of the oval-shaped green fruit of the tree. Traditionally, it is women who crack the pit, lightly roast the kernels, then pound and knead the resulting paste to extract the oil.

Using traditional methods, 2 pints of oil requires about 220 lbs. of fruit, and up to about 20 hours of work in one of about 25 women’s cooperatives set up in the region since 1996. Some of the co-ops have introduced a degree of mechanization that reduces the amount of manual labor required.

Others, however, such as the Marjana Cooperative near the Atlantic coastal city of Essaouira, prefer to maintain traditional methods to maximize employment. As the Marjana Co-op’s production rose from 1.5 tons in 2006 to 3.4 tons last year, the number of women employed full time almost doubled to nearly 50 workers.

For many women, it is their first paid job, and they can earn up to about $280 a month – a good sum in a region where many people live below the poverty line.

The Moroccan Argan Tree

The Argan tree is only found or grown in Morocco, nowhere else in the world. The Argan tree has fruit that produces oil. Not everyone can make Argan oil. The women in the villages are the experts. Ever since the European companies have established a monopoly on Argan oil, diluted products are left in the Argan trees’ home country, of Morocco. Argan oil can be used in so many ways.

Argan trees are grown in southwest Morocco. The trees have twisted trunks and knotted branches with thorns. Sometimes, the Argan can grow up to 8-10 meters in height. The fruit that the Argan produces has a green fleshy interior. Inside is a brown-golden nut, which contains-inside its hard shell- at least four little nuts. When squeezed, the nuts drip oil that is darker than olive oil. Argan oil is a natural resource of Morocco.

This treasured natural resource is made by women only. First, the nuts are picked out of the fruit. Then, the golden nut is cracked open and kneaded or grinded to extract the oil. The nuts that will be used for eating are roasted over an open flame and then grinded. To make only one liter takes about 20 hours. Argan oil is not just used for eating and cooking but is an ingredient in many skin, hair and health products.

Some Argan oil is put in many skin care products because it can lower the appearance of wrinkles and restores cracked skin. The oil is also used freely to hydrate the skin. Argon oil is not just used for skin care but also hair care. It can advance hair growth and cares for the scalp. People claim that sometimes the oil can prevent split ends as well as restore the shine to lifeless hair. Argon oil has amazing effects on body improvement. It can soothe arthritis pain, reduce skin inflammation, heal skin burns and eliminate stretch marks; all in one go! Body health is another token to Argan oil’s stupendous reputation. The oil has lowered cholesterol, stimulated blood circulation and strengthens the body’s immune system many times before. I got the Argan Oil with two beauty bars from the Argan Beauty Sampler Package for $39.99. I had a $6 discount for being a first time customer and shipping was $5.00. I paid a total of $38.99. Pretty good deal.

Packaging is good and the pump works well.

This is an amazing product for the hair.

A little goes a long way. I get a pump (& a half sometimes) and apply it on the ends of my hair. Whatever is left on my palms, I run through the bottom half of my hair.

Since you only need a little bit every time you use it, a bottle of this will last you a long time. Maybe a good 6-7months.

It moisturizes the dry ends of my hair and makes it soft.

It makes my hair shine and have a healthy glow.

This is now a staple for me. My hair loves this product!

As for the face, THIS PRODUCT BROKE ME OUT. I made the mistake of trying this on my face twice and then BAM! Break out galore!

I broke out so bad that I can't even explain it. I did not break out a lot but I had big & scary ones!

I have combination oily skin, if you have the same skin type, I suggest you keep it away from your face. Better safe than sorry.

YES for the hair.

BIG NO for the face.

Would I buy this again? YES. I will definitely buy another bottle of this Organic Moroccan Argan Oil but it is better and smarter to buy another Argan Beauty Sampler Package. The Argan Oil retails for $30 but with the Argan Beauty Sampler Package, I get the oil and two beauty bars for $39.99.

Fantasies: Josie Maran / Eden Allure Argan Oil

I was watching Josie Maran on QVC today selling her famous Argan Oil, and I was so intrigued by it! Argan Oil is very rare (hence the price tag $48 for 1.7 oz and $14 for 0.5 oz) and is described as a "miracle oil" because it hydrates and has all kinds of anti aging benefits. Josie also kept saying "read the reviews", and yes I indeed see lots of raving reviews on sephora.com. I love that many of them say it has cleared up their blemishes as well :)

I then went on youtube to see if I can find more reviews before spending $48 on something, and I saw a LOT of great reviews on the Eden Allure Argan Oil. I especially love the fact that many gurus say that even though it is an oil, it does get absorbed instantly (unlike the Egyptian Magic Cream) so it can be used in the mornings as well. And best of all, the Eden Allure Argan Oil is much more affordable - at $30 for 2.2 oz and currently it is $25.50 with coupon code "FirstTime".

Sounds amazing doesn't it? I love that it is all natural (you know me, I love natural skincare products!), fast absorbing, hydrating, anti aging and possibly also anti acne!! What I really want is a product that does all of that PLUS rids acne marks, which is probably near impossible to find. So anyway, I am very very intrigued by the Argan Oil and really want to try this!! What do you guys think??

The Argan (Argania spinosa, syn. A. sideroxylon Roem. & Schult.) is a species of tree endemic to the calcareous semi-desert Sous valley of southwestern Morocco and to the Algerian region of Tindouf in the western Mediterranean region. It is the sole species in the genus Argania.

Argan grows to 8-10 metres high, and live to 150–200 years old. They are thorny, with gnarled trunks. The leaves are small, 2–4 cm long, oval with a rounded apex. The flowers are small, with five pale yellow-green petals; flowering is in April. The fruit is 2–4 cm long and 1.5–3 cm broad, with a thick, bitter peel surrounding a sweet-smelling but unpleasantly flavoured layer of pulpy pericarp. This surrounds the very hard nut, which contains one (occasionally two or three) small, oil-rich seeds. The fruit takes over a year to mature, ripening in June to July of the following year.

The arganeraie forests now cover some 8,280 km² and are designated as a UNESCO Biosphere reserve. Their area has shrunk by about 50% over the last 100 years, owing to charcoal-making, grazing, and increasingly intensive cultivation. The best hope for the conservation of the trees may lie in the recent development of a thriving export market for argan oil as a high-value product.

In some parts of Morocco, Argan takes the place of the Olive as a source of forage, oil, timber and fuel in Berber society. Especially near Essaouira, the argan tree is frequently climbed by goats [1].

Argan fruit falls in July, when black and dry. Until that time, goats are kept out of the argan woodlands by wardens. Rights to collect the fruit are controlled by law and village traditions. The leftover nut is gathered after consumption by goats, but the oil produced from these nuts has an unpleasant smell and taste

Argan oil is produced by several women's co-operatives in Southwest Morocco. The most labour intensive part of oil-extraction is removal of the soft pulp (used as animal feed) and the cracking by hand, between two stones, of the hard nut. The seeds are then removed and gently roasted. This roasting accounts for part of the oil's distinctive, nutty flavour. The traditional technique for oil extraction is to grind the roasted seeds to paste, with a little water, in a stone rotary quern. The paste is then squeezed between hands to extract the oil. The extracted paste is still oil-rich and is used as animal feed. Oil produced by this method will keep 3–6 months, and will be produced as needed in a family, from a store of the kernels, which will keep for 20 years unopened. Dry-pressing is now increasingly important for oil produced for sale, as the oil will keep 12–18 months and extraction is much faster.

The oil contains 80% unsaturated fatty acids, is rich in essential fatty acids and is more resistant to oxidation than olive oil. Argan oil is used for dipping bread, on couscous, salads and similar uses. A dip for bread known as amlou is made from argan oil, almonds and peanuts, sometimes sweetened by honey or sugar. The unroasted oil is traditionally used as a treatment for skin diseases, and has found favour with European cosmetics manufacturers.

Argan oil is sold in Morocco as a luxury item (although difficult to find outside the region of production), and is of increasing interest to cosmetics companies in Europe. It was difficult to buy the oil outside Morocco, but in 2001-2002 argan oil became a fashionable food in Europe and North America. It is now widely available in specialist shops and, sometimes, in supermarkets. Its price (USD40-50$ for 500 ml) is notable compared to other oils.

Back in August The Observer Food Monthly ran a series of articles about ethical and unethical food. One of the products mentioned as an "ethical" choice was argan oil. I was immediately intrigued.

Argan oil comes from ancient argan trees, a species indigenous to North Africa. The argan forests in that region have been a part of Berber culture in the form of fuel, timber and food, but have been heavily exploited to the point where they have shrunk by 50% over the last 100 years. UNESCO has declared the forest a biosphere reserve.

So off I went to the supplier web site that was mentioned in the article, visions of ancient forests surrounded by deserts in my head.

The price - 18.50 GBP (about US $40) for one 250ml bottle - gave me sticker shock at first. But I ordered one in the interest of research (and greediness) and lo, a couple of weeks later it arrived in my mailbox. (I was just a bit disappointed that it was shipped from the U.K. rather than straight from Morocco, but I guess that's where their distribution point is.)

Besides being from an endangered species of tree, argan oil is also supposed to be very healthyl. According to the little tag that was attached to the orange-tinted frosted glass bottle, extra-virgin argan oil is

..traditionally eaten for breakfast in North Africa, with freshly baked bread, as a healthy start to the day. Delicious sprinkled on salads, grilled vegetables, and soups, its health giving properties have been known for generations. High in mono and polyunsaturates (80%), linoleic acid (34%), and plant sterols, it is a wholesome as it is delicious.

But enough about the social and health benefits. How does it taste?

First I opened up the bottle and sniffed it. It has a very unique smell - nutty, a bit like sesame oil, but with an slightly strange hint of something else that I couldn't put my finger on - sort of a "raw" scent. It's not unpleasant, just very unusual.

I poured out a little into a small glass bowl. The oil is a yellow color, like a light colored olive oil, with just a slight orange tint. (The bottle is tinted so you may think it's a bright orange, but it isn't. That bottle by the way is made in "150 year old moulds" and is "frosted to protect the oil" from light.)

I tasted it with the good old finger-in-the-bowl method. It has a very subtle but quite distinctly nutty taste. It's unlike any other nut or seed oil I've had before though. The closest to it is pumpkin seed oil, an Austrian speciality that I am rather addicted to. Argan oil has the same slightly spicy undertones, but is much milder than the dark, punchy pumpkin seed oil. It's not at all like olive oil, since it has no fruitiness or pepperiness to it.

So far we've only tried it sprinkled on salads (delicious) and on plain bread (even better). I tried sautéing some onions and garlic in it, and the smell was heavenly, but the flavor does dissipate a little (more than sesame oil does) when heated. So I think it's best used as a condiment, where you can get the full hit of flavor. It has a really addictive quality to it. Try drizzling a little on sliced or flat bread, sprinkling on a bit of sea salt, and then toasting the bread under the broiler. Yum. It's also great on grilled fish.

The only problem with ordering it again is the price. I'm wondering now if a trip to Morocco to bring back a suitcase full would pay for itself...

Moroccan argan oil is produced by Berber women in the Agadir region of Morocco. The women are part of cooperatives, women run and owned businesses. These cooperatives serve to protect the rights of the women by controlling wages, working hours and working conditions, as well as provide the women with education and healthcare. Argan Oil Morocco comes from southwest Morocco from the nut of the argan tree (argania spinosa). Argan trees grow in semi-arid, dessert like environments and live for over 200 years. They are endangered species and only grow in Morocco. The women in the cooperatives pick the argan fruit, let it dry in the sun, and then remove the argan nut. Once they have removed the argan nut, they crack the outer shell and remove the small kernal that is inside. This small kernal is what provides the Moroccan argan oil.

Argan oil Morocco can be cold pressed by machine or by hand. Machin e pressed is preferable because there is less argan kernal waste, there are no added ingredients during the process, and the Moroccan argan oil is purer. When argan oil is pressed by hand, it is mixed with local, non-purified water. The water is necessary when pressed by hand because it stimulates the oil to release from the argan nuts. Most hand pressed argan oil Morocco smell very pungent because they expire very quickly. (three months maximum). You want to stay away from argan oil products that contain pungent smells and fell greasy. A strong smelling or greasy feeling argan oil indicates that it is expired, not pure, or has been pressed by hand.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Face

When using 100% pure cosmetic grade argan oil, you only need to use a few drops for your entire face. A little really does go a long way. Nails

If your nails and cuticles are looking a little worse for wear, simply soak them in a 50:50 mixture of raw argan oil and lemon juice for 10 minutes (or even overnight). This will not only soften your cuticles and limit nail breakage but will also give your nails a healthy radiance.

Hair

For an intensive hair treatment to improve dry scalp and add shine, apply a generous amount of oil to dry hair, then wrap in a warm towel and leave for 30 minutes. Wash and style as usual.
